Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 617

This specimen was lot 617 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €140 (about US$182 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR patagon, 1617, Bruxelles. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Taches de vert-de-gris. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, patagon of 1617, Brussels mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown supported the jewel of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order chain around. Stains of verdigris, Very Fine.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Brussels mint 1612-21 and ND. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4434), Luxembourg and Tournai (Dav-4438). The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
