Brabant 1618(h) ducaton Dav-4428
The first specimen was lot 826 in Jean Elsen sale 108 (Brussels, March 2011) where it sold for 160 euros (about US$263 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR ducaton, 1618, Anvers. Droit : B. accolés des archiducs à droite. Revers : Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions, au-dessus du bijou de la Toison d'or. Nettoyé. Beau à Très Beau" (Duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabel (1598-1621), silver ducaton of 1618, Antwerp mint. Obverse: accolated busts of the archduke and archduchess to right; reverse: crowned shield supported by two lions, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Cleaned, Fine to Very Fine.)
The second specimen was lot 929 in Jean Elsen sale 109 (Brussels, June 2011) where it sold for 3,200 euros (about US$5,410 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR ducaton, 1618, Anvers. Droit : B. accolés des archiducs à droite. Revers : Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions, au-dessus du bijou de la Toison d'or. Provient de la collection Symkens. Belle patine. Bel exemplaire frappé sur un flan large et régulier. Très rare dans cette qualité. Nice patina, nearly Extremely Fine, very rare in this quality.)
Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1618-19 and at the Brussels mint 1618-21. A very similar coin was struck for Tournai (Dav-4430). The SCWC notes the Bruges issues as the most common, followed by the Antwerp issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
