Tournai 1618 ducaton Dav-4430
This specimen was lot 810 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €17,000 (about US$22,107 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR ducaton, 1618. D/ B. accolés des archiducs à d. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions, au-dessus du bijou de la Toison d'or. De la plus haute rareté. Très Beau. (lordship of Tournai, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, silver ducaton of 1618. Obverse: the accolated busts of the archdukes right; reverse: crowned arms, supported by two lions, below, the jewel of the Golden Fleece. Of the highest rarity, Very Fine.)"
This extremely rare type was struck at Tournai 1618 and 1620 only. The ducatons of Philip IV are not common but are much more available.
