Tournai 1588 ecu rev JElsen 107-814.jpg

This specimen was lot 814 in Jean Elsen sale 107 (Brussels, December 2010) where it sold for 280 euro. The catalog description[1] noted,

"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Philippe II (1555-1598), AR écu Philippe, 1588, Droit : B. cuirassé à gauche. Revers : Ecu couronné avec écusson de Portugal en surtout sur une croix de Bourgogne, entre deux briquets, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. Griffe au revers. Très Beau" (Lordship of Brabant, Philip II (1555-98), silver écu, 1588. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms with shield of Portugal over the cross of Burgundy and the Golden Fleece. Reverse scratch, Very Fine.)

By 1586, the revolt of the southern provinces had been crushed. The Spanish rulers, among other things, restored the old écu Philippe and its fractions and struck them to the end of the reign. By this time, king Philip had added Portugal to his domain, so that shield was added to the arms.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 33.65 g.
