Brabant 1592 ecu rev JElsen 109-916.jpg
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 916 in Jean Elsen sale 109 (Brussels, March 2011) where it sold for 840 euros (about US$1,420 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), AR écu Philippe, 1592, Bruxelles. B dans la date. Droit : B. cuirassé à droite. Revers : Ecu couronné avec écusson de Portugal en surtout, sur une croix de Bourgogne, entre deux briquets, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. Provient de la collection Symkens et de notre vente 54, 13-15 juin 1998, 1613. Rare. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe" (Duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, silver écu Philippe of 1592 Brussels mint, B under the date. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms charged with the arms of Portugal, over a cross of Burgundy, between the jewels of the Order of the Golden Fleece. From the Symkens collections and our (Jean Elsen) sale 54 of 1998, lot 1613. Rare, nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)

Ecus were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. A very similar coin was struck for Tournai. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 33.71 g.
