Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 379

This specimen was lot 379 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €110 (about US$145 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1593. Felipe II. Amberes. 1/20 de escudo felipe. MBC+. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1556-98, 1/20 écu Philippe of 1593, Antwerp mint. Very fine or better.)"

This coin was part of an early attempt to introduce decimal coinage. A similar coin was issued in Tournai. Other provinces issued decimal divisions based on the écu Philippe.

Specification: 3.42 g, 0.417 fine silver, 26 mm diameter, this specimen 3,07 g.
