Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 379

This specimen was lot 379 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €110 (about US$145 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1593. Felipe II. Amberes. 1/20 de escudo felipe. MBC+. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1556-98, 1/20 écu Philippe of 1593, Antwerp mint. Very fine or better.)"

This coin was part of an early attempt to introduce decimal coinage. However, the reported weight seems to match that of a tenth écu. A similar coin was issued in Tournai. Other provinces issued decimal divisions based on the écu Philippe.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 3,07 g.

Catalog reference: Vti. 796, Vanhoudt 310.AN.
