Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1868

This specimen was lot 1868 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €120 (about US$171 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips II (1555-1598), AR 1/20 Philipsdaalder, 1587, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Kz/ Gebloemd kruis. Uiterst zeldzaam. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Philip II, 1555-98, silver 1/20 écu Philippe of 1587, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned arms with the Order of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: floriate cross. Extremely rare, Very Fine.)"

This type represents a very early experiment with decimal coinage, over a century before Russia adopted her hundred kopeks = one ruble. One half, one fifth, one tenth and one twentieth écus or daalders were issued.
