Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 578
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 578 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €60 (about US$78 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), restauré, Cu gigot (duit), 1593, Maastricht. D/ B. cuir. à g. Trois annelets dans le champ. R/ Ecu couronné. Petits défauts de flan. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, restored, copper gigot of 1593, Maastricht mint. Obverse: armored bust right, three annulets in the field; reverse: crowned arms. Minor planchet defects, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

In the Dutch provincial system of the eighteenth century, a duit was a copper coin worth one-eighth of a stuiver or 1/480 of a ducaton. This one seems to be about half the weight of the liard.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper; this specimen 2,35 g.

Catalog reference: G.H. 233-2; W. 859; VH 326.
