Tournai 1594 1/20 ecu
This specimen was lot 517 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €60 (about US$83 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Philippe II (1555-1598), restauré, AR vingtième d'écu Philippe, 1594. D/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. R/ Croix fleuronnée. Très Beau à Superbe. (lordship of Tournai, Philip II, 1555-98 restored, silver twentieth écu of 1594. Obverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: floriate cross. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type represents a very early experiment with decimal coinage, over a century before Russia adopted her hundred kopeks = one ruble. However, the reported weight seems to match that of a tenth écu.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 3,26 g.
Catalog reference: G.H. 215-14; Hoc 305.
