Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1541
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 1541 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €300 (about US$428 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR demi-patagon, 1619, Anvers. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très Beau à Superbe. Provient de notre vente 62, 24 juin 2000, 1002. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, half patagon of 1619, Antwerp mint. Obverse: crowned Burgundian cross bearing the jewel of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp and Brussels mints 1616-19. A few were made without dates. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders, Luxembourg and Tournai. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.05 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 13,73 g.
