Jean Elsen sale 133, lot 769
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 769 in Jean Elsen sale 133 (Brussels, June 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR demi-ducaton, 1619, Anvers. D/ B. accolés des archiducs à d. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions, au-dessus du bijou de la Toison d'or. presque Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabelle, 1598-1621, silver half ducaton of 1619, Antwerp mint. Obverse: accolated busts of the archduke and archduchess to right; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions, Order of the Golden Fleece around. about very fine.)"

Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp and Brussels mints 1618-21. The SCWC notes the Brussels issues as somewhat scarcer than the Antwerp issue, tho both are rare. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 16.24 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 15,98 g.

Catalog reference: KM 48.1, G.H. 310-1; Delm-252; W. 929.
