Brabant 1621(a) patagon Dav-4432
This specimen was lot 907 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €120 (about US$154 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR patagon, 1621, Bruxelles. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Coup au revers. Petites taches. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, silver patagon of 1621, Brussels mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, bearing the jewels of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Reverse nick, some stains, Very Fine.)"
Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp and Brussels mints 1612-21. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders, Luxembourg and Tournai. The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.1 g, 0.875 fine silver; this specimen is 26,89 g.
