Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 24577
SB121-24577r.jpg

This specimen was lot 24577 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Brabant. Patagon, 1622. Philip IV of Spain. NGC VF-35. A fairly well detailed Patagon, with a strike typical for the type, but endowed with a pleasing dark gray tone with magenta and cobalt hues." This type was struck for Philip IV at Antwerp, Brussels (shown here) and Maastricht. Brussels produced this type 1621-39, 1645-57 and 1660 and its issues are about the same rarity as those of Antwerp. Maastricht patagons are rare. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common for the type.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-4462; KM-53.3.
