Brabant 1617(h) patagon Dav-4432
This specimen was lot 909 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €420 (about US$585 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR patagon, 1617, Anvers. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Écu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Légère faiblesse de frappe. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, patagon of 1617, Antwerp mint. Slightly weakly struck, nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp and Brussels mints 1612-20. A few were made without dates. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4434), Luxembourg and Tournai (Dav-4438). The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
