Jean Elsen sale 153, lot 1367

This specimen was lot 1367 in Jean Elsen sale 153 (Brussels, December 2022), where it sold for €130 (about US$164 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Albrecht en Isabella (1598-1621), AR patagon, 1616, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond Bourgondisch kruis. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Zeldzaam. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, silver patagon of 1616, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned Burgundian cross; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Scarce, Very Fine.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Bruges mint 1616-21 for Albert and Isabella, regents for Philip III of Spain. The SCWC notes the Flemish patagons as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
