JE159-0921r.jpg

This specimen was lot 921 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €40 (about US$51 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), Cu double denier, 1616. D/ Monogramme AE couronné. R/ Ecu couronné, posé sur une croix de Bourgogne, accosté de la date. Très Beau. (lordship of Tournai, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, copper double denier of 1616. Obverse: crowned monogram "AE"; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross divide the date. Very fine.)"

This is the most common date of a type struck 1607-09 and 1615-17. A similar coin was struck in Flanders as a dubbele penning. Altho this example is corroded and cleaned, seventeenth century coppers rarely come nicer than this.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 2,20 g.

Catalog reference: KM 12, G.H. 299-7; Hoc 403; VH 599.
