Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 817

This specimen was lot 817 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €220 (about US$286 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR patagon, 1616. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Rare. Très Beau. (lordship of Tournai, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, silver patagon of 1616. Obverse: a Burgundian cross under a crown, supporting the jewel of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, order chain around. Rare, Very Fine.)"

This patagon, intended to be equal to the gold souverain d'or, was struck for Albert and Isabella 1616-21 and ND. It is priced lower than the patagons from Brabant and Flanders but is probably scarcer.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 28,01 g.
