Jean Elsen sale 125, lot 1665

This specimen was lot 1665 in Jean Elsen sale 125 (Brussels, June 2015), where it sold for €370 (about US$492 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, Léopold II (1790-1792), AV ducat, 1792-E, Karlsburg. D/ T. l. à d. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée avec l'écu d'Autriche sur la poitrine. Légères traces de monture Très Beau. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold II (1790-92), gold ducat of 1792, Karlsburg mint. Obverse: laureate bust to right; reverse: crowned imperial eagle with the arms of Austria on its breast. Slight trace of mounting, very fine.)"

This type is listed for several mints from 1790-92 and is scarce. Confusingly, Friedburg lists this under Hungary, which is technically correct, as Karlsburg is in Hungary, but the design is strictly Austrian.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, .109 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3,41 g.

Catalog reference: KM 1883, Jaeckel 82; Her. 10; Fr-207 (listed under Hungary).
