Sincona sale 34, lot 4406

This specimen was lot 4406 in Sincona sale 34 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 6,500 CHF (about US$7,716 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Franz II. (I.), 1792-1835 Taler 1792. Wien Königstaler. Sehr selten. Fast FDC. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis II, 1792-1835, Vienna mint, king's thaler of 1792. Very rare, about uncirculated.)"

This rare type is the first thaler of Francis II, last emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. It is distinguished from the regular issue of 1792-1804 (Dav-1178) by the reverse featuring griffins supporting the Austrian arms instead of the usual imperial eagle.
