Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 761

This specimen was lot 761 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €220 (about US$286 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Léopold II (1790-1792), AR demi-couronne, 1792 H, Günzburg. Type brabançon. D/ T. l. à d. R/ Croix de Bourgogne entre trois couronnes, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Leopold II, 1790-92, silver half crown thaler of 1792, Gunzburg mint, Brabanter type. Obverse: laureate head right; reverse: Burgundian cross between three crowns, supporting the jewel of the Golden Fleece. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck in 1790-92 at Vienna (mintmark "A") and Günzburg (mintmark "H", shown here). As none were actually made in the Netherlands (the revolt of 1790 having closed the mint), we have filed this issue under Austria. However, the SCWC files this under Austria, Austria-Netherlands. Others were made with the bust of Francis II (KM 61.1). The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, Belgium passed to the king of the Netherlands.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.72 g, 0.873 fine silver, this specimen 14,77 g.

Catalog reference: KM 41, Jaeckel 94; Her. 48.
