France AN14-A franc
This specimen was lot 34164 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, Year 14-A (1805/6). Paris Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS MS-62. A delightful example from the final year of the type, this nearly-Choice minor glistens with original brilliance and a subtle pastel tone, and stands as the finest observed in the PCGS census for the date and mint. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Lepczyk in 1984 for $575). Ex: George Sobin Collection (Lepczyk - 3/1984) Lot # 1182." This issue, from the Paris mint, is a slightly scarce issue of a type struck AN 12-14. A complete set of this type comprises 39 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. During An 12, Napoleon promoted himself from First Consul to Emperor, causing a design change in the coinage. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed.
Recorded mintage: 297,574[2].
Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
