Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1002

This specimen was lot 1002 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €3,450 (about US$4,302 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AV 40 francs, an 14 U (sur 13), Turin. Seulement 1.199 p. frappées. Très Rare. Coups sur la tranche. presque Très Beau. (France, Napoleon I (1804-14), gold forty francs of the year 14, Turin mint. Only 1,199 pieces struck. Rare, rim nicks, about very fine.)"

This type was struck Year 13-14 and is known with only four dates. In 1806, the revolutionary calendar was dropped and Gregorian dates resumed.

Recorded mintage: 300[2], a rare date.

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.
