SB925-71379r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71379 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, Year 14-U (1805). Turin Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS EF-40. Already emanating from a lower mintage, this type would appear to be even RARER, especially in such an elevated state of preservation, as is the case here. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from CGF in 2013 for $4,200 [!]). Ex: CGF FPL 26 (12/2013) Lot # 304102." This type was struck years 12-15 of which the An 13-A is by far the most common date. This very rare date was struck in Turin and is also sought by Italian collectors. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed.

Recorded mintage: 15,394[2], a rare date.

Specification: 5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, decorated edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: F.201/38, KM-656.14; Gad-443.
