France AN14-A 5 francs
This specimen was lot 3101 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"France, I. Kaiserreich. Napoleon I. 1804-1815 5 Francs AN 14 (1805). A, Paris, Gutes sehr schön. (France, first Empire, Napoleon I, 1804-15, five francs of the year 14, Paris mint, good very fine.)"
Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Paris mint (mint mark "A") in 1805-06. It is a slightly better date of a somewhat scarce type. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the fourth, struck 1804-06 (AN 13-14) with a complete set of this type comprising 27 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate in France after World War One.
Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Nicholas Brenet, 1770-1846, and Jean-Pierre Droz, 1746-1823; this specimen 24.90 g.
Recorded Mintage: 1,854,305[2].
