This specimen was lot 34136 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 2 Francs, Year 14-H (1805/6). La Rochelle Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS AU-55. Sporting a pale gray tone, this elegant, near-Mint survivor also features some golden-olive hues nearer the peripheries and emanates from an EXTREMELY RARE and paltry output. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This half dollar-sized coin was struck at La Rochelle under the régime of Napoleon as emperor. The type was struck AN12-14 only and is rather scarce. It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[2] notes 35 dates for the type, most very rare. This date is rare. Year 12 (1803-04) represents the first year all the silver and gold denominations appeared. Silver half, one and five francs and gold twenty and forty francs had appeared previously but year 12 saw the introduction of the silver quarter and two francs.
