Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34185

This specimen was lot 34185 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Demi-Franc (1/2 Franc), Year 14-A (1805/6). Paris Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS AU-58. Though this type does not feature an extremely low mintage figure, it nevertheless remains quite elusive and RARE, with Margolis even noting that very few are known. Quite attractively toned and enchanting, with a wondrous original iridescence. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Patrick Guillard in January 2010 for $3,887). Ex: Jean Elsen & ses Fils 103 (12/2009) Lot # 965." This dime-sized coin was struck at Paris under the régime of Napoleon soon after he made himself emperor of France. The type was struck AN12-14 only and is rather scarce. It was demonetized in 1869.

Recorded mintage: 19,935[2].

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, reeded edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
