Mexico 1858/7-Go PF 4 escudos
The first specimen was lot 11014 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $632.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Escudos, 1858/7-GoPF. Cleaned. VERY FINE." The second specimen was lot 21371 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[2] noted,
"MEXICO. 4 Escudos, 1858/7-GoPF. NGC AU-53. Richard Long commented in 2003, 'The 1858 is a rare coin...no AU or BU are known to exist.' We see a few other examples in archived records, all well worn and generally poorly struck. This example is evenly struck, but the relief is shallow. The overdate is very bold and a small planchet flaw is observed in the obverse field above the assayer's initials. Quite lustrous, this may perhaps be the finest known."
The Guanajuato mint was the most prolific producer of four escudos but many of its issues are rare. The overdate 1858/7 is the only variety known for the year; no regular date is recorded.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.875 fine gold, .381 troy oz AGW.
