Heritage sale 3032, lot 25432

This specimen was lot 25432 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $15,862.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1864 Oa-FR, Oaxaca mint, MS66 NGC. A Gem Uncirculated specimen of this very scarce issue, in absolutely flawless condition. While only scarce as a date, Mint State examples of this mint are very difficult to come by. In this stellar quality, the present specimen must be the finest extant of this date, and undoubtedly among the very finest of this type available. Its importance as a type coin can hardly be overstated, and it will undoubtedly get major attention." The Oaxaca mint struck eight escudos 1858-69; most of the dates are available in well circulated condition but nice specimens are scarce, especially as the Oaxaca mint is notorious for poor strike.
