Mexico 1889-Ga S 10 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70238

This specimen was lot 70238 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2020), where it sold for $100. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1889-Ga S. Guanajuato Mint. NGC MS-64. Possessing some shimmering luster beneath its golden-russet toning, this near Gem is exceeded in the NGC census by just a sole specimen." This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1871-77, 1881-95 at the Guadalajara mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. The Guadalajara mint was opened in 1812 during the War of Independence and closed in 1895 along with Alamos, Chihuahua, Durango and Hermosillo.
