Mexico 1872-Go S peso

This specimen was lot 24414 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $900. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1872-GoS. NGC MS-61. Good strike with light iridescent tone showing multi-color hues. From the Alex Siegel Collection." It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of Mexico's silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. Other mints include Culiacan (scarce), Guadalajara (scarce), Mexico City (common), Oaxaca (scarce), Chihuahua (common), Durango (slightly scarce), Zacatecas (common) and Potosi (scarce).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 1,560,000 (including overdate 1873/2 and over mintmark Go/Mo).
