This specimen was lot 416 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,716 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH. Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 2 Louis d'or aux huit L et aux insignes 1701 N, Montpellier. Réformation. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, double louis of the eight L's and insignia of 1701, Montpellier mint, reformed. Very rare, Very fine.)"
This type, called a double louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes, was issued 1700-04 on new and "reformed" blanks and like all double louis before the 1740's, is rare. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. This is a scarce date of a rare type.

Specification: 13.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers, this specimen 13.36 g.
