This specimen was lot 1800 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "[[France|FRANCE]]: Louis XVIII, 1814-1815, AE decime, 1815-BB, Strasbourg Provisional issue, variety with periods after decime and date, glossy brown color, EF." As Napoleon's empire collapsed in the spring of 1814, French forces found themselves beseiged in the town of Strasbourg. Lacking funds to pay the soldiers, the commander ordered the mint there to produce bronze or brass décimes conforming to the specifications of the décimes of L'an 5. After Napoleon abdicated, the commander changed the "N" on the obverse to an "L" for Louis XVIII and continued production. In 1815, the weight was reduced to 20 g from 25 g. Both "N" and "L" types were issued in 1815 and they continued to circulate for decades afterward, causing most cataloguers to include them as regular French coinage. All are very difficult to obtian in choice condition.

Stephen Album sale 37, lot 1800
SA37-1800r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1800 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE: Louis XVIII, 1814-1815, AE decime, 1815-BB, Strasbourg Provisional issue, variety with periods after decime and date, glossy brown color, EF." As Napoleon's empire collapsed in the spring of 1814, French forces found themselves beseiged in the town of Strasbourg. All are very difficult to obtain in choice condition.

Recorded mintage: 1,266,920.

Specification: 32 mm diameter, 20 g, copper or bronze.

Catalog reference: F.132A/3, KM-701var, Gadoury-196c.
