Sincona sale 83, lot 5202

This specimen was lot 5202 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 3,200 CHF (about US$4,283 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND, 5 Rappen 1850, ohne Mzz. Äusserst seltene Erhaltung. (five rappen of 1850, without mintmark, Extremely rare condition. FDC. Uncirculated. Prachtexemplar. Cabinet piece)." This type was minted 1850-51 in Strasbourg, France, as the Helvetic Confederation was being organized. It is accompanied by billon ten and twenty rappen. It comes mintmarked AB, BB and without mintmark (shown here), which last is very rare. It was later minted in Bern 1872-77 before being converted to copper-nickel in 1879.
