Sincona sale 83, lot 5200

This specimen was lot 5200 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$241 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND, 5 Rappen 1850 BB, Strassburg. FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Uncirculated, Magnificent condition)." This type was minted 1850-51 in Strasbourg, France, as the Helvetic Confederation was being organized. It is accompanied by billon ten and twenty rappen. It comes mintmarked AB, BB (shown here) and without mintmark, which last is very rare. It was later minted in Bern 1872-77 before being converted to copper-nickel in 1879.
