Saxony 1696 2 ducats Fr-2775
This specimen was lot 2103 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,654 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
GOLD. R Fassungspuren, bearbeitet, sonst sehr schön. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus I (Augustus the Strong), double ducat of 1696, Dresden mint, on his departure for the campaign against the Turks in Hungary. Obverse: Elector with sword and baton in his right hand stands to left, turning his head back, his left hand resting on a table standing next to him, with an electoral hat and sword on it; reverse: a burning altar divides the date. Rare, traces of mounting, tooled, otherwise very fine.)"
This specimen seems a little light to be a double ducat, which is how it is catalogued. It may actually be a double goldgulden. Another double ducat was struck in 1696 (Fr-2774) with a different design.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.98 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6,38 g.
