Künker sale 406, lot 4054

This specimen was lot 4054 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €17,000 (about US$22,306 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich August I. 1694-1733 (August der Starke). 2 Dukaten 1695, Dresden. Geprägt mit den Stempeln des 1/8 Reichstalers. “FR - ID · AUGUST · D · G · DUX · - SAXON · I · CL · M · ANGR · & · W ·Brustbild r. in Kurornat, in der Rechten Schwert, davor Kurhut auf einem Tisch//SAC · ROM · IMP · ARCHIMARS · ET · ELECT · (Münzzeichen: gekreuzte Pfeile) · 1695 · Unter Kurhut drei Wappenschilde, unten zu den Seiten die Signatur I - K (Johann Koch, Münzmeister in Dresden 1688-1698). GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit feinem Prägeglanz, min. gewellt, vorzüglich. (electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus I "the Strong", 1694-1733, double ducat of 1695, Dresden mint, struck using dies for a one-eighth thaler. Obverse: bust right in electoral robe holding a sword, an electoral cap on the table; reverse: capped arms, engraver's initials below. Extremely rare, attractive example with fine luster, slightly wavy, extremely fine.)"

This rare type was struck only in 1695. A double ducat with the mounted figure of the elector (KM 673) also exists. This example realized over 3½ times the catalog value.
