This specimen was lot 74592 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $145. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 1/3 Taler (1/2 Gulden), 1694. Dresden Mint. Johann Georg IV. PCGS AU-53. Commemorating the death of the Elector. Fairly evenly toned, this barely-circulated specimen presents an elegant appearance and retains some hints of brilliance throughout." The electors of Saxony issued an extensive series of gulden (⅔ thaler) and half gulden (⅓ thaler) in the late seventeenth century. Common in worn condition, they are today scarce in upper grades.
