Saxony 1697-EPH 1/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 72246 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony (Albertine). 1/3 Taler, 1697-EPH. Leipzig Mint. Friedrich August I. NGC AU-58. On the very cusp of Mint State status, this enchanting fractional denomination offers a steely gray hue and a great deal of original brilliance populating the fields. Undoubtedly one of the finest of the type that one can hope to encounter." This type was struck 1695-97 and is scarce. Mintmasters IK and EPH are known for all three dates. One third thaler was half a gulden. The elector would waste the wealth of Saxony trying to hold the throne of Poland.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
