Saxony 1694-IK thaler Dav-7651
This specimen was lot 725 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Albertine Line. Taler, 1694-IK. Johann Georg IV (1691-94). NGC MS-63. Struck to commemorate the death of Johan Georg IV. Wonderfully struck on lustrous metal, with full detail to the complex legend and inscription. Old envelope toning with high luster coming through. Highly attractive. From the Rockaway Collection." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. The prosperity of Saxony declined after the duke embroiled it in wars over the Polish succession. The production of thalers also dropped and many of the later types are rare, including this one.
