This specimen was lot 30089 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $9,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rare Type and Date Saxony. Johann Georg IV gold Ducat 1694-IK, Dresden mint, MS62 NGC. Obv. Johann Georg facing right wiith sword on shoulder. Rev. Crowned arms with date above. Brilliant, original mint luster, with a bold strike. The entire four-year type is extremely rare, and this date is especially difficult to obtain. Johann Georg, the oldest son of Johann Georg III and Anna Sophie of Denmark, followed his father as Elector of Saxony. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman / B.G. Johnson." This type of 1691-94 is rare, even by the standards of Saxon ducats. The accompanying half ducat (Fr-2759) is more available. The electors of Saxony were more interested in claiming the throne of Poland than developing their realm, impoverishing both countries in the process.
