Saxony 1692-IK 1/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 1191 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$428 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum. Johann Georg IV. 1691-1694. 1/3 Taler 1692, Dresden. Vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John George IV, 1691-94, one third thaler of 1692, Dresden mint. Extremely fine.)"
The electors of Saxony issued an extensive series of gulden (⅔ thaler) and half gulden (⅓ thaler) in the late seventeenth century. Common in worn condition, they are today scarce in upper grades. This type is noted for 1692-93 before being superseded by KM 640.
