Saxony 1691-IK thaler Dav-7643
This specimen was lot 25193 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1691-IK. Dresden Mint. Johann Georg III. NGC AU-55. Commemorating his death. Featuring an armored arm descending from the clouds and bearing a flag in honor of the recently departed duke, this lightly handled example still retains a good deal of glistening brilliance. From the Augustana Collection." The second specimen was lot 4369 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €420 (about US$551 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Georg III. 1680-1691. Taler nach Leipziger Fuß 1691, Dresden, auf seinen Tod. Kl. Kratzer im Feld der Rückseite, sehr schön. (electorate of Saxony, John George III, 1680-91, thaler of the Leipzig standard, Dresden mint, on his death. Scratch on the reverse field, very fine.)"
We note four different thalers for this year: KM 607/Dav-7642 (Johann Georg III), KM 616/Dav-7643 (death of Johann Georg III, shown here), KM 617/Dav-7645 (death of Johann Georg III) and KM 618/Dav-7647 (Johann Georg IV). Of the four, this one is the most affordable.
