Künker sale 293, lot 1212

This specimen was lot 1212 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €600 (about US$809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich August I. 1694-1733 (August der Starke). 2/3 Taler 1695, Leipzig. Kl. Zainende, fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Bernhard Terletzki. Exemplar der Auktion Heinz-W. Müller 8, Solingen 1973, Nr. 714. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus I the strong, 1694-1733, two-thirds thaler of 1695, Leigzig mint. Minor clip, about extremely fine.)"

The gulden or two-thirds thaler suddenly attained great popularity in northern Germany in the 1670's and were emitted in large quantities from many localities. The elector of Saxony issued this type 1694-97 and it is listed as common.
