Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 726
Saxony Stacks Jan15-726r.jpg

This specimen was lot 726 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $16,450. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Albertine Line. Taler, 1696-IK. Friedrich August I (1694-1733). NGC MS-64. VERY RARE & Exceptionally Choice Taler Commemorating the Birth of the Prince Elector. Struck to commemorate the birth of the Prince Elector who would later succeed his father as Elector of Saxony Friedrich August II. Wonderfully struck on lustrous metal, giving full detail to the highly complex design which incorporates a city view of Dresden and an interior scene. Light even envelope toning which barely subdues the high luster beneath. An impressive gem which will be an excellent addition to any collection of Talers. From the Rockaway Collection." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. The prosperity of Saxony declined after the duke embroiled it in wars over the Polish succession. The production of thalers also dropped and many of the later types are rare, including this one.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: silver.
