Künker sale 353, lot 3735

This specimen was lot 3735 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €550 (about US$766 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 6 Kreuzer 1746 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1745 geändert), W-AHE, Breslau. Prägung für die Provinz Schlesien. Mit FRIDERICUS D G REX BORUSSORUM in der Vorderseitenumschrift und "W" (= Wratislawia) unter dem Schild der Rückseite. Münzmeister Adam Heinrich von Ehrenberg. R Vorzüglich. Erworben im Oktober 1995 von Fritz Rudolf Künker, Osnabrück. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, six kreuzer of 1746 (1746/5 overdate), Breslau mint, struck for the province of Silesia, with the initial "W" under the shield on the reverse. Rare, extremely fine.)"

After Frederick the Great seized Silesia in 1742, he issued kreuzer denominated coinage for the province which did not directly convert into the thaler-based coinage used in the rest of the realm. One, three, six, 15 and 18 kreuzer were issued along with one and two groschel pieces. This type is listed for 1745-47. The last six kreuzer was struck in 1757.
