Künker sale 353, lot 3334

This specimen was lot 3334 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €24,000 (about US$33,401 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Dukat 1745, EGN, Berlin. FRIDERICVS - BORVSSORVM REX Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel und Ordensband//Gekröntes Monogramm, umher die Kette des Schwarzen Adlerordens, unten zu den Seiten die Jahreszahl 1745 und die Signatur E . G . N (Ernst Georg Neubauer, Münzmeister in Berlin 1725-1749). GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Nur wenige Exemplare bekannt. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Goldpatina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Westfälische Auktionsgesellschaft 12, Dortmund 1998, Nr. 756. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, ducat of 1745, Berlin mint. Obverse: armored and mantled bust with order sash; reverse: crowned monogram, the chain of the Order of the Black Eagle all around, the date and initials below. Extremely rare, with only a few examples known. Very attractive example with handsome gold patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1745 only and is very rare. Issues of ducats in Prussia, never prolific, dwindled after the introduction of the frederick d'or in the 1740's.
