Künker sale 353, lot 3725

This specimen was lot 3725 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,505 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 15 Kreuzer 1745 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1744 geändert), W-AHE, Breslau. Prägung für die Provinz Schlesien. Mit "W" (Wratislawia) unter dem Schild. Münzmeister Adam Heinrich von Ehrenberg. Von großer Seltenheit. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Friedrich Otto, Rittergut Passendorf, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 126, Osnabrück 2007, Nr. 2420. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, fifteen kreuzer of 1745 (1745/4 overdate), Breslau mint, struck for the province of Silesia, with the initial "W" under the shield. Extremely rare, extremely fine.)"

After Frederick the Great seized Silesia in 1742, he issued kreuzer denominated coinage for the province which did not directly convert into the thaler-based coinage used in the rest of the realm. One, three, six, 15 and 18 kreuzer were issued along with one and two groschel pieces. This type is listed for 1743-46 and is the last of its denomination.
