Künker sale 386, lot 4984

This specimen was lot 4984 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,461 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 1/12 Taler 1746, ICG, Esens. 3.26 g. Münzmeister Johann Christian Gittermann. Gekröntes Monogramm, darunter Jahreszahl// * 12 * / EINEN / REICHS / THALER / I · C · G · / c . Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Sehr schön. (kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, one-twelfth thaler of 1746, Esens mint. Obverse: crowned monogram, date below; reverse: value, mintmaster's initials. Extremely rare, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1740-46. It was likely intended for Ostfriesland. No more were struck until 1750. This mintmaster is not listed in the SCWC for this type and is doubtless very rare.

Recorded mintage: 5,056,644 (mintmaster EGN).

Specification: 3.60 g, 0.437 fine silver, this specimen 3,80 g.

Catalog reference: KM 226 (unlisted mintmaster), Olding 7; Kluge 29.
