Künker sale 353, part of lot 3678

This specimen was part of lot 3678 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,227 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 1/4 Stüber a) 1/4 Stüber 1746 ICG, Esens. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. Das Monogramm mit gemeinsamen Grundstrich. Münzmeister Johann Christian Gittermann. Exemplar der Auktion Berliner Münz-Cabinet 10, Berlin 1979, Nr. 3313. ...RR 2 Stück., Belag (1x), sehr schön. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, quarter stuvier of 1746, Aurich mint, struck for the western provinces. The monogram with a common base. Very rare, [one of] two pieces, very fine.)"

Aurich was the capital of the county of Ostfriesland, which was ruled by its native princes until the extinction of the line in 1744, whereupon it fell to the Hohenhollerns, who retained the mint there. The Prussians lost the province to Napoleon in 1807 and it passed to Hannover at the Congress of Vienna. This is a rare one year type.

Recorded mintage: 58,000.

Specification: billon, this specimen 0,72 g.

Catalog reference: KM 196 (listed under East Friesland), Kluge 282; Olding 247 b.
