Prussia 1746-ICG 2 mariengroschen
The first specimen was lot 4985 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,753 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 2 Mariengroschen 1746, ICG, Esens. Münzmeister Johann Christian Gittermann. Gekröntes Monogramm, l. daneben Wertzahl "2"//II / MARIEN / GROSCH : / 1 7 4 6 / I · C · G . Von allergrößter Seltenheit, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Mi. Belagreste, winz. Zainende, Stempelglanz. (kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, two mariengroschen of 1746, Esens mint. Extremely rare, especially in this quality, outstanding quality, minor pitting, small edge clip, uncirculated.)"
The second specimen was lot 4134 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$4,986 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 2 Mariengroschen 1746, ICG, Esens. Münzmeister Johann Christian Gittermann. Gekröntes Monogramm, l. daneben Wertzahl "2"//II / MARIEN / GROSCH : / 1 7 4 6 / I · C · G . Die Krone steht frei über dem Monogramm. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, double mariengroschen of 1746, Esens mint. Obverse: crowned monogram, value to left; reverse: value with date and mintmaster's initials. Extremely rare, some planchet defects, extremely fine.)"
This rare type is mentioned in the SCWC under Ostfriesland, which became a Prussian province on the extinction of its dynasty in 1744.
